As a Database Platform Engineer, you will join the team responsible for the mission-critical MySQL backbone serving millions of users worldwide. The role focuses on raising automation ceilings and shaping the long-term database strategy for the next decade of growth.
Your tasks- Own the administration and reliability of Proton's web-scale MySQL fleet accessed via ProxySQL, including a 24/7 on-call rotation.
- Design and implement automation to eliminate manual operational toil and improve platform reliability.
- Write code and tooling to manage, monitor, and scale the database platform, treating infrastructure as software.
- Drive performance tuning across hardware, OS, storage, network, and query levels to resolve bottlenecks.
- Lead database version upgrades and full stack updates with minimal service disruption.
- Evaluate emerging technologies like distributed databases to influence cross-company engineering standards.
Your profile- 3+ years of hands-on experience operating highly available MySQL databases at scale in production.
- Deep MySQL expertise in replication, query optimization, indexing, and performance tuning.
- Solid experience with ProxySQL and Linux in production environments.
- Strong automation background using scripting or custom tooling to reduce operational toil.
- Experience running databases on bare-metal or on-premise infrastructure rather than cloud-managed services.
- Comfortable with observability stacks such as Prometheus and Grafana.
What we offer- Work that matters, with a team that answers only to users, not advertisers or investors.
- A diverse, collaborative team with members from leading global organizations and academic institutions.
- Stock options from day one, ensuring a real stake in the company's success.
- Flexible working hours where outcomes matter more than clock-in times.
- Comprehensive benefits including health coverage, retirement options, and generous leave.
- Offices in Geneva, Zurich, Barcelona, London, and Paris, with up to 30% remote flexibility.
