Summary
Proton in Geneva seeks a Network Reliability Engineer to automate and optimize its global network infrastructure using a protocol-first approach. You will build self-service APIs and ensure high uptime for privacy-focused services.
Job Description
Proton, founded by CERN scientists, builds the world's largest encrypted email service and other privacy tools. The company is profitable, independent, and operates with a light hierarchy. As a Network Reliability Engineer, you will join a team that treats network infrastructure as software, focusing on continuous observation, rapid capacity adaptation, and relentless automation.
Your tasks
- Own the reliability and performance of Proton's global network infrastructure, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and protocol-level optimizations.
- Deploy and maintain network security controls such as firewalls, IDS/IPS, and ACLs without relying on vendor-specific shortcuts.
- Build and improve automation tooling in Python, Go, or Rust to expose network capabilities as self-service APIs.
- Lead or contribute to network upgrades and data center fabric migrations with minimal disruption.
- Operate and extend telemetry pipelines and Kubernetes-based network controllers, contributing upstream to community tooling when beneficial.
- Participate in on-call rotations and drive post-mortems through to corrective action.
Your profile
- 5+ years of hands-on experience implementing and operating enterprise-scale networks in production.
- Deep practical knowledge of BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, EVPN VXLAN, and TCP/IP, reasoning from the protocol rather than the vendor UI.
- Experience configuring network security controls without dependence on proprietary features.
- Ability to script confidently in Python, Go, Rust, or equivalent languages.
- Solid Linux and DevOps fundamentals, including comfort with the CLI, Terraform, and Git-based workflows.
- A hardware-agnostic mindset, having worked across multiple vendors.
What we offer
- Stock options from day one, giving you a real stake in the company.
- Access to the right hardware and software to do your best work.
- Investment in your learning and development with real ownership from day one.
- Strong health coverage, retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support.
- Free lunch and snacks daily, plus coverage for public transport, bike allowances, or parking.
- Flexible working hours that prioritize outcomes over fixed schedules.
